We're not nervous, you're nervous. Shane Lowry is making a hell of a run at The Open, and we can maybe start to dream of what the weekend might hold.
While the vast majority of the Irish attention was placed on Rory McIlroy in the buildup to this event, Lowry has stepped up to fill the void left by the Holywood native's shocking opening round.
After a very impressive 67 yesterday, the Clara man took to Portrush like a man possessed this afternoon.
Three birdies in his opening three holes saw him leap straight back into contention, catching up with some of the low scorers from the early pairings. Another birdie followed on the fifth, and Lowry was only getting started.
This beauty of an approach on the eighth saw him move to -9, and earn sole possession of the lead.

Two holes later he sunk a monster putt to move into double figures.

Lowry has a decent record in major championships, including finishing runner up in the US Open in 2016. While there is still a lot of golf to play, he is positioning himself perfectly heading into the weekend.
Let's keep our fingers crossed.
