Sometimes, golf ceases being a sport and instead becomes a kind of existential tussle played out on incongruously splendid lawns. This happened to golfer Russell Knox on the infamous 17th at Sawgrass. The hole is nicknamed the 'island green', although as one pedant on Wikipedia pointed out, it is 'technically a peninsula'. Wilson approached the hole in contention for the lead, just five shots behind Jason Day. By the end, he was well out of contention, shooting a sextuple-bogey nine. It's a pretty tough watch:

A hard Knox life.
It was an extremely difficult day generally at Sawgrass yesterday. Shane Lowry dropped well back out of contention, with both Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia complaining about how quick the greens were playing. Garcia tweeted the following acerbic skewering of the course:
Today at @THEPLAYERSChamp those were without a doubt the quickest browns, I mean greens 😉 I've ever played in my career! ⚡️⚡️fast😵🤕

Garcia had serious trouble with the greens all day: watch him agonisingly five-putt a par four here.
