Unfortunately this summer, we've been treated to a number of disgusting things. Germany manager Jogi Low was notorious for it. The formerly suave German had a habit of sticking his hands down his pants disgusting the entire continent.
It seemed as those the Northern Irish Ryder Cup captain has taken over his mantle. It's not the same method of disgust - but Nick Faldo on the American commentary was absolutely disgusted:
Darren Clarke at #TheOpen: "Oops, dropped my gum. It should still be good.
[chews it again] ... oh no."https://t.co/s52lHjM2O2— SB Nation (@SBNation) July 15, 2016
Except though, it wasn't gum. The world, including myself fell hook, line, and sinker for it. Clarke himself revealed all on his twitter account.
I don't do gum!! It was a small sticker from my hat that fell down when I was putting, and it never touched my mouth! https://t.co/hORmSMjXZA

In hindsight, that just makes the American commentary all the funnier
