With the 2022 US Open getting underway today at The Country Club in Brookline Massachusetts, Irish pro golfer James Sugrue was sharing some of his memories of playing the tournament as an amateur in 2020.
It was the topic of conversation with Bubba Watson's caddy Teddy Scott that remains in the Irish man's memory from the competition.
James Sugrue played in the same group as Bubba Watson during the 2020 US Open at Winged Foot. Bryson DeChambeau was the only player to finish under par at the difficult course, leading to a first major win for the big hitter.
Speaking on The Build Up in association with Ladbrokes, Sugrue said:
His caddy at the time was Teddy Scott, and his fitness coach is a guy called Mike Carroll, Fit for Golf, who's a Cork man as well. So on the first hole, Teddy turns to me and says who's better at hurling, Mallow, which is my home town or Mourneabbey which is like the next parish over. I didn't know that him and Mike were friends so it was nice to ease me into it nicely."
Sugrue qualified for the covid-affected US Open after winning the 2019 Amateur title at Portmarnock.

Sugrue on playing with big names at the tournament
James also spoke about what it was like to play alongside a two time major champion in Bubba Watson at the 2020 US Open.
So I played with Bubba Watson and Lee Westwood which was a great group. That same day the two of them played really well. Lee I'm going to say after day one was coming maybe second. Yeah he was like a robot that day, it was unbelievable golf. Just same thing every time, every time, every time.
And in Winged Foot, I remember the 10th, the 10th is a par 3 and behind the green an Irish guy owns the house so there was a big Irish flag like outside. He knew when I was coming around and he was roaring at me and things like that so it was an amazing experience.
Speaking about Bubba Watson's technique and playing style, Surgue said that some of the shots were "just bizarre".
It's more the way he shapes it is more impressive I think, like some of the places he was aiming to hit the ball on the fairway was just bizarre. You know hitting these big banana slices and then hitting a draw. He's a real artist of the game.
The 2022 US Open gets underway today with Rory McIlroy currently sitting as the bookies favourite to win his second US Open title.
