Brooks Koepka became the first golfer in almost thirty years to claim back-to-back wins at the US Open yesterday evening. However, across a weekend that was noted for its high-scores and Phil Mickelson's Saturday afternoon madness, the United States Golf Association (USGA) have been drawn into apologising for an incident described as 'deeply regrettable.'
One of the many golfers in the mix during yesterday's tense run-in, Patrick Reed - the divisive winner of this year's Masters - is central to this story; although only incidentally.
On the first hole of his final round, Reed's second shot was being introduced by Joe Buck, the commentator on duty for Fox Sports 1. Carrying along expected lines, the sound suddenly shifted, and viewers were plunged into the conversation of what the USGA have described as a 'few fans' seemingly picked up on an outlying microphone.
In what appears almost too incredible to have been pure coincidence, two men are discussing in some detail the sexual exploits of one man in question. Considering the number of people this broadcast would have reached, the language used really couldn't have been any less appropriate:
Man A - That's my ex.
Man B - Yeah, she's hot
A - That’s when we were fucking so hard, and I headbutted her in the head.
B- Sure
A - An I smacked that bitch down.
B - Yeah, what actually happened, pal?
A - No, straight up. We kind of went in the [indistinct] position, and I was laying down…
Over as quickly as it had begun, the next thing everybody hears is once again Buck, commentating in such a way that one wouldn't suspect he had heard anything himself. In what was a disgraceful incident, Janeen Driscoll, a spokesperson for the USGA, spoke to Sporting News of the issue afterward; 'We are working closely with our partners at Fox Sports to address this issue.'
