Tiger Woods had a sensational third round, finishing with a five-under 66 to leave him in contention ahead of the final day. Elsewhere, Justin Rose roared into contention with a remarkable, course record-equalling 64. Zach Johnson, Kevin Kisner and Jordan Spieth are among the overnight leaders to enjoy strong starts on Saturday.
Rory McIlroy has struggled for momentum in the opening few holes of his second round, while Paul Dunne shot a frustrating 73, finishing off with a double-bogey on 18.
The Open Leaderboard
McIlroy and Dunne are the only Irish involved across the final two days. There'll be no weekend golf for Darren Clarke, or Padraig Harrington, the champion the last time The Open was played at Carnoustie 11 years ago.
Harrington for the second day in a row played the front 9 to par, but collapsed on the back 9, finishing with a 74, and +8 for the Championship. Meanwhile, 2011 champion Clarke looks set to finish in last place having started as he left off on Thursday, when his 82 marked his worst ever round in a Major Championship.
