Not strictly speaking a success in the crossbar challenge sense, but Shane Lowry received rapturous acclaim from all around him when he twanged the goalpost with an elegant chip.
The Lowry family's GAA credentials have been well-flagged, with his father Brendan being a vital member of the team which won the most famous All-Ireland of all time in 1982, and with Shane himself having acted as a pundit on Marty Morrissey's no-frills weekly championship magazine programme, 'Championship Matters.' It was on this that he was famously introduced not as 'Irish Open Champion 2009' or 'Portugal Masters Winner 2012' but rather as 'the best golfer in Offaly.' A defiantly localist, GAA minded, and almost Patrick Kavanagh-like manner with which to introduce a European Tour pro golfer. "I inclined, To lose my faith in Ballyrush and Gortin, Till Homer's ghost came whispering to my mind... etc'
No doubt Paul McGinley will be asked to comment on this event and will say something open-ended and non-committal. Sadly, the direct hit on the goalposts will not deliver any Ryder Cup points to the Offaly man.
