Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas's foursome woes this morning summed up what has been a record-breaking disaster for Team USA at this year's Ryder Cup. However, Tommy Fleetwood came up with a tremendous moment as Thomas and Spieth tried to questionably work the referee for an easier lie.
In what was teed up to be one of the most competitive Ryder Cups in a decade, Team USA are trailing by seven points and have broken two unwanted records as their weekend continues to go from bad to worse.

Of the eight matches played on the opening day Team USA claimed just a point and a half failing to win a single match, the first time either Europe or the USA have been unable to win a single game on the opening day. If that wasn't bad enough Brooks Koepka and Scottie Scheffler broke another record on Saturday morning, suffering a record defeat as they lost their foursome 9&7.
Tommy Fleetwood hides joy as Spieth and Thomas question referee
While a lot of American hopes were pinned on Thomas and Spieth this morning, things couldn't have gotten much worse. They desperately struggled to pull together any sort of form, winning just two of the opening nine holes against the formidable partnership of Tommy Fleetwood and Rory McIlroy.

In a moment that summed up their morning, Thomas found his ball buried in the rough after the ball was allegedly stood on. With no obvious shot available and a more than trying lie to deal with, Thomas and Spieth called in a rules official, hoping for easy relief from their predicament.
Spieth/Thomas asked the match referee, can we get a 2nd opinion..🙄

Spieth and Thomas were not getting the rub of the green with the rules official (no pun intended), and they vehemently contested the decision, pleading for a second opinion.
As all this went on, a strong Tommy Fleetwood stood dutifully by ensuring that the Americans were not given an inch as they desperately called the rules official into question. Despite the unusual and questionable intervention from Team USA Fleetwood didn't budge, struggling to hide his laughter and joy as Spieth and Thomas's pleas fell on deaf ears.
Unfortunately for the Americans, when it rains it pours. Spieth and Thomas found themselves in a near-identical dilemma just a few holes later with Luke Donald assuming Fleetwood's role making sure Spieth or Thomas didn't get away with a fast one.
Europe goes into the fourballs this evening with a seven-point lead and just five points off winning the tournament outright. Should they carry the morning's success into the evening, the 2023 Ryder Cup could be as good as over by the end of the day.
