No away team has ever lost all four opening foursomes and come back to win the Ryder Cup, but that's the feat that Darren Clarke's Europe team now face having been destroyed by the USA on a grim Minnesota morning.
Ryder Cup Results
Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed saw off Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose 3&2 in the opening clash, with Rose's putting putting pay to any chance Europe had of making winning start.
Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler came back from the brink to finish 1Up on Rory McIlroy and Andy Sullivan. The iconic lefty and Fowler took three of the final four holes to overcome a two-hole deficit in the second square-off.
Jimmy Walker and Zach Johnson actually finished before Mickelson and Fowler in the third, with the American duo beating Sergio Garcia and Martin Kaymer 4&2, taking five of the final five holes played en route to a resounding victory.
In the fourth match, Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar annihilated Lee Westwood and Thomas Pieters 5&4 having been 5Up after the opening eight holes.
Within a historical context, these results would suggest that Europe need a Miracle In Minnesota if they are to take the Ryder Cup back across the Atlantic on Monday morning.
