The golf ball which Rory McIlroy slotted on the 18th green on the Sunday of The Open has been auctioned off for $52,038 dollars, after it was bought by a golf memorabilia collector.

Green Jacket Auction sold the ball after it was caught by an Englishman Lee Horner, for what is the second highest fee ever paid for a golf ball; narrowly less than a Bobby Jones autographed ball which fetched $55,865.

A spokesman for the auctioneers said:

There was a lot of interest in this ball.

We had 22 different bidders from countries across the world, including Ireland, Australia and countries in Asia.

It'll be funny if the chap that bought it somehow accidentally manages to lose it in a water hazard during his next round.
