Things could hardly have gone much worse for Roy McIlroy during the 152nd edition of The Open.

The 35-year old came into the tournament on the back of a decent performance at the Scottish Open last week, his first appearance since his collapse at the US Open last month. However, that form did not follow him to Royal Troon.

McIlroy was well short of his best during the opening two rounds, with an overall score of +11 meaning he missed the cut by five shots. It also meant that his mission to end his major drought will enter an 11th year.

While his involvement in The Open has come to an end, he will be keeping a close eye on proceedings over the weekend.

Considering how Rory McIlroy fared at The Open, you might imagine that he will look to put the tournament him behind as quickly as possible. Indeed, he said he would be heading on holidays for the coming days in order to recharge ahead of representing Ireland at the Olympics in Paris next month.

However, the involvement of Shane Lowry at the top of the leaderboard ensured that he will be following the tournament very closely over the last two rounds. The pair have grown incredibly close over the last number of years, spending quite a bit of time together both on and off the golf course.

Speaking after his final round at the tournament, Rory McIlroy would show his class by making some lovely comments about Lowry and his hopes that his friend would win a second major title over the coming days.

I can’t wait to watch this weekend. Shane’s so creative. I think even just watching the coverage the last couple of days, that little sort of squeezy cut that he can hit, especially going out in that front nine, is going to be really helpful to him.

Look, he relishes these conditions. He loves playing these conditions. The Open Championship is his favourite tournament in the world. He gets more up for this than anything else.

I’m looking forward to cheering him on and hopefully him getting his second jug.

A nice touch.

Shane Lowry has often found himself in major contention over the last number of years, although this does look like his best opportunity to win one of those events since his victory at The Open back in 2019.

He will very have Rory McIlroy and the rest of the people of Ireland in his corner in his attempts to do so.
