Rory McIlroy endured a nightmare start at The Open at Royal Portrush on Thursday morning, carding a quadruple bogey eight on the first hole.
There were huge roars for the home favourite as he stepped up to the first. However, his tee-shot shot was wild and ended up out of bounds.

McIlroy then had to hit a provision ball which also went left.
His subsequent shot also landed in deep rough and he was forced to take an unplayable and a drop before chipping onto the green with his sixth shot.
The 30-year-old then two-putted to start the round +4.
McIlroy holds the course record of 61 at the course. That was a record which he set as a 16-year-old.

After parring the second, McIlroy then carded a bogey on the third to leave him at +5.
