Rory McIlroy has claimed Greg Norman needs to leave his role with LIV Golf in order to end the dispute between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour.

In a time where the sport has never been more divided, the Saudi-backed LIV Golf tour has seen some of golf’s biggest names leave the PGA Tour for huge financial increases, despite the clear attempts of sportswashing used through this tour.

Dustin Johnson, Graeme McDowell, Ian Poulter, Phil Mickelson, Cameron Smith  and Brooks Koepka are just some of the biggest names to join the tour, and have repeatedly attempted to justify their participation, with Greg Norman CEO of the controversial organisation.

Nobody has spoken up against LIV Golf as much as Rory McIlroy, who has called on Greg Norman to step aside from his role from LIV.

Speaking ahead of this week’s DP World Tour Championship, McIlroy has claimed a solution could be reached between the groups with Norman no longer involved.

“I think Greg needs to go. I think he just needs to exit stage left. He’s made his mark but I think now is the right time to sort of say, look, you’ve got this thing off the ground but no one is going to talk unless there is an adult in the room to mend the fences.

If those two things happen, then things can happen But right now, it’s a stalemate because there can’t be any other way.

Whether that’s in the hand of a court or a judge or something else happens along the way, no one really knows. But right now it seems like it’s a bit of a stalemate.”

Legal Challenges

A legal hearing in February is set to establish to faith of those involved in the LIV Golf that hope to play in the Ryder Cup. As it currently stands, players in LIV Golf cannot take part in the DP World Tour.

While this has damaged the relationship between Rory McIlroy and his team-mates, McIlroy believes there can be forgiveness in the future after a rollercoaster year for the sport.

“It’s obviously been a very contentious year in golf. The best thing in golf is to have all the best players playing together, and with what’s happening right now, that’s not happening.

So I fear for the game when that’s going on. It’s contentious because there’s lawsuits going on and people suing people. It’s very, very messy.

If all that stuff can be sorted out one way or the other, then you can get to the stage where there’s forgiveness and people can have dialogue and come to some sort of common ground or compromise.”
