It has been a disastrous opening day for Rory McIlroy who shot an opening round of 8o at the 2018 US Open in Shinnecock Hills.
McIlroy was playing alongside Jordan Spieth and Phil Mickelson. He carded four bogeys and two double bogeys on his front nine to leave him some way off early on.
McIlroy misery at ten over through eleven. This is the first time in a major that he has had three double bogeys on his card. #usopen

It wasn't any easier for Spieth or Mickelson who both finished +8 while Ian Poulter and Scott Piercy lead at -1. McIlroy did hold it together on the back nine and landed a birdie on 15.

Conditions have been reported to be windy but the round leaves McIlroy as a massive outsider for the tournament. As for the other Irish, Graeme McDowell is currently in action while Shane Lowry will tee off shortly.
