Rory McIlroy was living up to his reputation as one of the game's most outspoken players, as he hit out with a serious dig at Henrik Stenson.
Stenson was due to be the 2023 Ryder Cup captain, but lost his position to Luke Donald when he decided to join LIV Golf. Donald, given his success and popularity with the team, has now signed on for a rare second stint as captain for the 2025 tournament.
Rory McIlroy And Ian Poulter Embroiled In Twitter Spat
We reported earlier in the week on McIlroy's decision to backtrack on his views and call for the rules to be changed to allow Jon Rahm to compete for Europe at the 2025 Ryder Cup, and he was asked on Twitter whether he 'also wants to change the rule so Stenson can captain the team?'
'The best thing to happen to the 2023 Euro Ryder cup team was Henrik going to LIV!', McIlroy ruthlessly replied.

Guys calm down …. This is a parody fake account.. Rory McIlroy wouldn’t say this. it’s fake I promise you. He is a class act and wouldn’t say that about a Team mate. 👍🏼🙏🏼🙌🏼🏆🇪🇺

Nice to see the season of good will in full swing! Merry Christmas!!! https://t.co/d95JWiXDR9

LIV defectors, Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood, also got in on the conversation with a few digs of their own.
Poulter sarcastically tweeted 'Guys calm down …. This is a parody fake account.. Rory McIlroy wouldn’t say this. it’s fake I promise you. He is a class act and wouldn’t say that about a Team mate. 👍🏼🙏🏼🙌🏼🏆🇪🇺', before Westwood replied with the done to death line 'I remember my 1st beer', and 'Nice to see the season of good will in full swing! Merry Christmas!!!'.
Any doubt about the relationship between McIlroy and his former friends has firmly been put to bed with this latest spat.
Rahm's move to LIV has also appeared to have opened the floodgates, with reports that Tony Finau and Tyrell Hatton are set to join.
