When LIV Golf first emerged, Rory McIlroy was one of the biggest critics of the breakaway Saudi-backed tour. He believed that it was a huge threat to the future of golf and went against everything the game was meant to stand for.

The Holywood native would later step back from discussing LIV in public, believing that doing so had an impact on his wellbeing and play on the course. Of course, the issue has now been put to bed after the PGA Tour entered a partnership with the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF).

It remains to be seen what impact the new arrangement will have on professional golf. It seems likely that the breakaway players will be allowed to return to the traditional tour, although events could still take place moving forward.

It was even rumoured in recent days that McIlroy and Tiger Woods could be given their own teams on the new tour moving forward. However, we can probably now put that notion to bed.

Rory McIlroy throws huge dig at LIV Golf

Speaking after his opening round at the Scottish Open earlier today, Rory McIlroy was asked if there was a possibility that he could play on LIV Golf at some point in the future. His answer suggested that it's not very likely.

If LIV Golf was the last place to play golf on Earth, I would retire. That's how I feel about it...

I think I’m apathetic to all the noise around it and as long as the tournaments that I play keep on existing I’ll be very happy to play them and be a professional golfer and try to get a little bit closer every day to trying to master my craft.

The thing that I’ve realised is, no matter what I do or say or try to show leadership, I’m going to be just fine.

I’ve tried to step up for maybe the guys that didn’t have a voice early on, but I think with everything that’s transpired over the last few weeks the players are going to find themselves more and more at the table to try to get whatever that is they want out of it.

Again, as long as I get to play the golf that I’ve known over the last 15 years of my career, I’ll be happy.

You won't get a stronger answer than that.

It safe to say we won't be seeing Rory McIlroy tee it up in LIV Golf anytime soon.
