Rory McIlroy gets his latest crack at ending his major drought when he takes to the prestigious PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Kentucky this week.

The County Down native has not won a major championship since tasting PGA Championship success at the venue a decade ago - in what was his fourth major win by the age of just 25.

Few could have predicted that McIlroy would suffer a 10-year barren spell in golf's four biggest events, such was his form at the time.

He has remained a serial winner on the PGA Tour, winning the Wells Fargo Championship last weekend just two weeks after claiming the Zurich Classic in tandem with Shane Lowry.

However, major events have been his undoing and after a decade of near-misses he will be desperate to add a fifth.

McIlroy, who is not typically bullish going into major weekends, admitted that he feels like the 'stars are aligning' following his Wells Fargo win last weekend. His recent form and previous win at Valhalla has certainly strengthened his case.

However, reports from TMZ that he has filed for divorce from wife Erica Stroll after seven years of marriage has indicated that his preparation has not been ideal.

The US outlet has claimed that McIlroy, 35, filed his court papers on Monday - a day after his 26th PGA Tour win.

Regardless, Irish golf legend Paul McGinley believes there are two golfing hurdles McIlroy must face this weekend that he did not have to overcome 10 years ago.

Paul McGinley claims there are two reasons for Rory McIlroy's major drought

McGinley, speaking on The Golf Channel's Live From The PGA Championship, speculated that McIlroy needs to overcome two barriers that have stopped him winning an elusive fifth major regardless of his fine form.

There are two issues as to why he is not the player he was back then when it comes to major championships," McGinley said.

"The fields are stronger now. Back then he was a young guy forging his way and his elbows were at their pointiest. It was really a case of 'I am on a march to be the top player in the game so get out of my way'. He had this clear vision.

"As you get there and climb the mountain can you stay there? He has done that in PGA Tour events where his win ratio of 10% is fantastic compared to anyone else. Even Scottie Scheffler has only got a win ratio of 8%.

"But there is no doubt that there is a psychological build-up from not getting over the line in major championships since, that he hasn't circumnavigated yet.

"I say yet because if he gets it once I feel - maybe not the floogdates will open - that there is certainly another three or four majors in Rory McIlroy.

"It is all about getting the first one. You would have to think that a golf course like this, that he has won on before, is the kind of thing that could ignite him."

All eyes will be on McIlroy this weekend but he is sure to face stiff competition from Masters champion Scottie Scheffler, who returns to action following the birth of his first child.

There will be a whole host of LIV Golf players in the field too, with defending champion Brooks Koepka looking to win the title for a fourth time.
