Rory McIlroy made it clear, following the PGA Tour player meeting at the BMW Championship earlier in the week, that Tiger Woods was indeed still the 'alpha' in golf.
It wasn't too much of a revelation from McIlroy, nothing we didn't know already, but it was a nice soundbite. The fanfare surrounding the arrival of Woods in Delaware this week was enough to show how much weight he still pulls on the PGA Tour.
The vague understanding of the meeting that took place between Woods, McIlroy, and other top PGA Tour pros, was that its purpose was to get players on the same page in terms of the direction of the tour, with the goal of countering the pull of LIV Golf.
Finer details have now emerged of the discussions and ideas from the meeting, with Alan Shipnuck of the Fire Pit Collective reporting that a concept for a new 18 tournament 'tour-within-the-Tour' was discussed.
According to a source 'with direct knowledge of the meeting', the 18 tournaments would feature the world's top 60 players, no cuts, and purses of $20M, while the rest of the tour compete in concurrent smaller tournaments.
Tiger Woods Landing Ahead Of The Meeting
Tiger Woods has landed where he hopped in a car with Rickie Fowler. Although the audio isn’t clear, Fowler expressed concerns with Tiger driving. He said “Seriously? Be fucking careful this time.”

This new concept would hopefully ease the flow of top players to the LIV Golf Tour, with the serious bump in prize money. It would also help out with a problem that Rory McIlroy spoke of which was, "we need to get the top players together more often than we do.’’
Right now, the info from the 'secret' meeting is sparse, but more details should emerge in the coming weeks/months. Xander Schauffe spoke of a 'code' of silence between the players who were invited to the sit-down.
“Yeah, I think I'd be pretty unhappy if I saw one of those guys from (Tuesday) night just blabbering to you guys what we talked about. That would be really frowned upon, and you probably wouldn't get invited back to the meeting. Yeah, there's a little bit of a code there, I'd say.’’
The world no. 6 also described the meeting as 'great', 'exciting', and 'fresh.'
