After an unexplosive opening, Shane Lowry tore it up on the back nine at Sawgrass today. He hit a course record 29 to head for the clubhouse at 65.
Five birdies and an eagle after the turn took him to -7.
He might have been confident that this would put in the lead after Round 1 but Jason Day proceeded to equal the course record with a 63.
Day leads the Players Championship (*insert obligatory reference to its status as the 'fifth major) by two shots from Lowry, Bill Haas and Cameron Tringale.
Oddly enough, Lowry felt out of sorts all week. According to Jason Sobel, it was a tip from Graeme McDowell which righted things.
Shane Lowry said his swing didn't feel right this week. Got a tip from Graeme McDowell. Felt better. Shot 29 on the back for a 7-under 65.

Most encouragingly, someone in Google has finally twigged that Shane Lowry the golfer is not the same man as Shane Lowry the Australian Rules Footballer and have changed his nationality accordingly.
