Mark Mihal was playing the Annbriar course in Illinois last Friday when something very unexpected happened, he fell down a sinkhole on the course. Mark was out playing a foursome with some friends when as he was checking the distance for his playing partner when an 18ft deep, 10ft wide sinkhole opened up in the middle of the fairway underneath him.

Mike could hear Mark moaning and ran in the direction where he had been standing just a few seconds earlier. It was immediately clear what had happened; the ground had caved in and Mark had fallen into the earth – 18 feet underground.

“I felt the ground start to collapse and it happened so fast that I couldn’t do anything,” Mark said later. “I reached for the ground as I was going down and it gave way, too. It seemed like I was falling for a long time. The real scary part was I didn’t know when I would hit bottom and what I would land on.”

A ladder was brought from the clubhouse but was 6ft short of reaching the bottom of the hole. Mihal's friend Ed volunteered to go down into the hole and aid in his rescue by tying a rope around him so he could be lifted out of the hole.

Luckily Mihal only suffered a dislocated shoulder in the fall.
