Rory McIlroy leads the Irish charge in the men’s Olympic golf tournament.  The Holywood man shot a -4 round of 67 to close the gap to leader Xander Schauffele of the US to 3 strokes. McIlroy is in a group of  4 golfers tied in 5th place on -11 for the tournament.

Shane Lowry is just a further shot back after shooting 68 on a day when scoring was down overall from Friday’s birdie blitz.  His three round total of 203 leaves him 4 off the lead and within striking distance of the medals.  The man from Offaly drained a superb par putt on the last to stay in the top 10.

Japanese superstar Hideki Matsuyama lies second on -13 with GB’s Paul Casey and Mexico’s Carlos Ortiz currently occupying the bronze medal position. If golfers are tied in medal positions after round four, there’ll be a play off to separate them.

Lowry will play with the Abraham Ancer and Cam Smith. McIlroy will play with Carlos Ortiz of Mexico and Sebastian Munoz of Colombia.
