Conor McGregor's latest article for Independent.ie makes for interesting reading.
A piece entitled "Haters pay to see me in a pool of my own blood" actually offers an insight into an area that Conor McGregor has never let us near before; fear and anxiety.
While The Notorious' describes these feelings as normal human emotion, the acknowledgement that they exist is perhaps something we were not expecting due to the typical media interviews we have come to expect from him.
More in tune with what those who read the piece would have been expecting was a mention of another Irish athlete in Rory McIlroy, where McGregor seemed to question the amount of money the golfer earns as he is not putting his body in danger.
I can say with absolute certainty that there is no harder-working sportsman in Ireland.
There is no sportsman with more on the line than me right now. They are queuing up to see me fall. To see me face down. All over the world they want to see it.
Rory McIlroy is worth 50 million. Fifty million earned in a game with essentially nothing on the line.
If your consciousness, your facial structure, your limbs are not on the line, nothing is on the line. I have it all on the line. On a global scale. Like no other Irish athlete before me.
While McIlroy is not putting himself in danger every time he steps on to the first tee, it does seem strange that McGregor focused on the money he earns for being a part of the elite in his sport, one which has become incredibly lucrative for top talents in recent years.
Most of the article was an enjoyable read for fans of McGregor, and there certainly is an argument to be made for McGregor being the hardest working sportsman in Ireland, but was there any need to discuss what one of golf's biggest stars earns?
Regardless, we're looking forward to his next column, hopefully he gives his opinion on Jack Grealish...
