It's very kind of the world's number 1 golfer to make us feel good about ourselves. You will have seen Rory McIlroy's club fly into the water on Friday, but was that really where he was aiming?
Let's have a look at his swing with the pro tracer:
His hip movement is very good, perhaps showing why he is the world's top ranked golfer but that's about the only positive you can say about it. His stance is far too open for the shot he intends to play, and although you can see the force between the swing - his open stance contributes to his unusually high 3-iron.
From there, you can see that McIlroy is annoyed with his shot, as the club flies higher than normal. Using the pro tracer, it's obvious he's hooked another one, and instead of lying safely on the fairway, the club finds the drink.
McIlroy needs to close up his stance, perhaps use another hand on the club and most importantly, needs to grip the club a lot tighter.
