The Ryder Cup is set to commence at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Rome, Italy from September 29 to October 1, 2023. Our guide to the 2023 Ryder Cup Europe standings will give you everything you need to know about how the 2023 Ryder Cup team will be chosen, and which players have already sealed automatic qualifying positions, as we head into the final day before the team is announced.

The European Ryder Cup team will be captained by Luke Donald when they compete against the United States in September. The 2021 European Ryder Cup team featured Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy and, after McIlroy's place on the 2023 team was confirmed this month, we hope there'll be at least two Irish golfers involved this year.

How will the 2023 European Ryder Cup team be chosen?

The qualification process for the 2023 European Ryder Cup team goes like this:

There are six automatic selections and six captain's choices. The top three ranked golfers from both the European and World points list will automatically qualify for a spot on the team.

When will the European Ryder Cup team be named?

Qualification for Team Europe began last September and the deadline for qualification ended last weekend after the Omega European Masters in Switzerland. Luke Donald named his six captain picks today at 2pm.

  • Rory McIlroy (Ireland) - confirmed

Luke Donald's Six Captain Picks for Team Europe

  • Tommy Fleetwood
  • Shane Lowry
  • Ludvig Aberg
  • Sepp Straka
  • Justin Rose
  • Nicolai Hojgaard

Where do things stand heading into the final day of captain selection for the European team?

Shane Lowry posted a disappointing missed cut in Prague last weekend, meaning he can no longer qualify automatically.

This means he'll be relying on Luke Donald for a captain's pick.

Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy were the first two European players to confirm their place on the team, qualifying through the European points list. Viktor Hovland has joined them as the third member.

Following Sunday's Tour Championship results, Tyrell Hatton is also effectively qualified for the team.

MacIntrye will be looking to hold that final automatic qualifying spot at the European Masters in Switzerland this weekend. Matt Fitzpatrick pipped Tommy Fleetwood for his automatic spot after an impressive showing in Switzerland last week.

After months of positions being interchanged, the first six on on the Team Europe Ryder Cup have been sealed. The six who gained automatic qualification are McIlroy, Rahm, Hovland, Hatton, MacIntyre and Fitzpatrick are the automatic qualifiers.

Tommy Fleetwood and Sepp Straka are certain captain's picks. Shane Lowry and Justin Rose are two players who many believe will be chosen on the strength of past performance, with Donald left to choose between the likes of Adrian Meronk, Yannick Paul, Rasmus Hojgaard (who finished 3rd in Prague) and young Swede Ludvig Aberg for the final two slots.

Note that Europe's LIV golfers - Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter, for example - cannot be selected.

Who is Team Europe's Captain For The 2023 Ryder Cup?

Luke Donald was named as the European Captain for the 2023 Ryder Cup back in August of last year.

The English golfer is a fountain of knowledge and experience when it comes to the Ryder Cup.

He represented Europe in the Ryder Cup four times as a player, being on the winning team in each of his four appearances at the cup.

Donald was a part of the 2012 Ryder Cup, where he led Team Europe out in the singles, gaining the first blue point on the board in the 'Miracle of Medinah'.

Apart from the six selected from the Ryder Cup Europe standings, he will also pick six more players to join his team as captain picks.

Irish contenders who have missed out on the 2023 Ryder Cup

Seamus Power's best route for automatic qualification was on the world tour as he was ranked 13th in the standings, though he continued to drift further and further away from an automatic qualification spot, resulting in him missing out on a place.

Padraig Harrington is looking less likely to be picked for the 2023 Ryder Cup. As the table stands Harrington ranks very low on both tables for the Ryder Cup Europe standings. If Harrington was to be picked to feature on Team Europe it was looking like it would have to be through the captain's picks and not automatic qualification, which unfortunately he was not picked by Luke Donald for.

2023 Ryder Cup - Team USA

Similar to the way European players are selected, Players from the USA can earn a slot on the US team by performing well in this year's golf tournaments and gathering points.

Similarly to the Ryder Cup Europe standings, the top six players with the most points secure a spot on the U.S. team, while the other six slots similar to Europe will be Captain's selections

US Rankings

The six automatic qualifiers for the US Ryder Cup team were officially confirmed on Sunday with the conclusion of the BMW Championship. Scottie Scheffler, Wyndham Clark, Brian Harman, Patrick Cantlay, Max Homa, and Xander Schauffele will be joined by six captain's picks from captain Zach Johnson.

Rank Name Points

2 Wyndham Clark (Qualified) 13,738.920
3 Brian Harman (Qualified) 11,100.539
4 Patrick Cantlay (Qualified) 10,946.750
5 Max Homa (Qualified) 9,638.764
6 Xander Schauffele (Qualified) 9,450.269
