One of the most hotly anticipated gaming releases of 2023 is finally upon us, with Bethesda studios releasing Starfield on Wednesday.
The RPG has been in development for nearly eight years, was announced five years ago, and comes from the studio who brought us the acclaimed Skyrim and Fallout games.
It was only natural, then, that a new release would bring excitement, and the first reviews are pouring in for Starfield after it hit the shelves this Wednesday.
Bethesda release eagerly-awaited Starfield
Starfield release info and gameplay
The latest game from Bethesda studios, Starfield has released on both Xbox Series X/S and Windows through Steam.
Will Starfield be multiplayer?
Starfield is a single-player action role-playing game, and the game is being estimated to give somewhere between 30 to 40 hours of play time.
We've already gotten plenty of sneak peeks of the gameplay, and the gameplay trailer we got two months ago still looks as spectacular as it did the day it launched.
How open world will Starfield be/How many planets are in Starfield?
The game follows an open-world plan, with over 1,000 planets to explore, as the player leads a silent protagonist through adventures which bring them into contact with multiple NPCs and bring them to many of these planets, as well as their moons and a number of space stations.
Early Starfield reviews
So far, Starfield has drawn in some impressive reviews.
It can be difficult for a game with as much hype as Starfield received to live up to its billing but the early indications are that it has.
On Metacritic, the PC version of Starfield has a rating of 88, while the Xbox version has received a rating of 86 - both impressively high.
Some of the reviews speak of the game in glowing terms. The Washington Post (100/100) says, "When it comes to central storylines, this is easily the best Bethesda quest yet," while Xbox Addict (100/100) has said:
Bethesda has not only crafted a new compelling and wondrous universe to explore where you can play in any way you desire, they’ve created one of the most important games of this generation and prove once again they’re the best at what they do.

The PC version of the game has received similarly high praise. IGN Japan have declared the game is Bethesda's best open-world effort yet, saying:
Starfield’s vast universe is home to unique planets, factions and characters and offers a wide array of choices. It allows you to become whoever you want to be, and savor both the light and dark sides of the universe the way you want to. Starfield doesn’t only improve on Bethesda’s previous games, but gives birth to an entirely new universe that is the company’s best open-world RPG yet.
