It's hard to believe, but the PlayStation 5 will celebrate its third birthday later this year.
The hugely popular console launched in November 2020, with two separate editions available for gamers. One "digital edition" came without a disk drive (and began at €400 Irish RRP), while a second edition (beginning at €500) came with a disk drive.

By early this year, Sony had sold over 30 million units but, three years into the cycle, they will naturally be looking at ways to improve the console's shelf life.
Reports this week suggest that we could see a new edition of the PlayStation 5 hitting stores as early as September, in a move that would track with Sony's previous release of consoles.

PlayStation: New PS5 console pencilled for late 2023
Insiders reporting to GamingBible have suggested that a "slim" edition of the PlayStation 5 could hit shelves as early as this September.
The inverted commas are due to an unusual reported design choice from Sony. Though it is unclear how large the new edition would be compared to the original model, it is suggested that it would be sold with a detachable disk drive, allowing Sony to manufacture only one base console, rather than the two different models currently being made.

Various reports point to the detachable disk drive being a key part of the new PlayStation 5 console, and it appears as though it could be announced at a Sony expo next month for a September release.
Looking back to the PlayStation 4 era, the initial console was released in November 2013 for €400, before a PlayStation 4 Slim (€300) was released in September 2016, alongside a new model named the PlayStation 4 Pro.
Similarly, the PlayStation 3 was launched in late 2006, with the slim model folllowing in 2009.
The precedent would suggest that a three-year gap to a "slim" model would track with the latest rumours surrounding a new PS5 model, and gamers can hope for a reduced price from the initial launch of the Sony console.
