All the Nintendo talk in recent weeks has been dominated by the upcoming Switch 2 console, but it has now been revealed that the company are in the very early stages of developing a different handheld console.
They recently filed a patent for a device that is similar in appearance to the 3DS, but can be split in two to accommodate wireless gaming for two people.
There has been speculation that the patent may in fact be the Switch 2, but it seems more likely that it is for an entirely different device.
However, it must be noted that not all patents come to fruition, and, as you can see from the designs below, there is not a huge amount to decipher about the prospective console.

"Well, first I can't comment--or I won't comment, I should say--on the rumors that are out there. But one thing we've done with the Switch to help with that communication and transition is the formation of the Nintendo Account," Nintendo of America boss Doug Bowser said of the Switch 2.
"Our goal is to minimize the dip you typically see in the last year of one cycle and the beginning of another," he added. "I can't speak to the possible features of a new platform, but the Nintendo Account is a strong basis for having that communication as we make the transition."
