EA Sports first ever game for the UFC was a big success, as beautiful graphics, action-packed gameplay, and a career mode that started in The Ultimate Fighter house had MMA fans delighted to finally have a big-budget game for the sport they love.
Even today over a year after it's release people are still playing EA Sports UFC, a game which more than anything proved to be ridiculously fun when you have a few friends around and want to knock each other out, and it seems as though those who were involved in the production of 'UFC 2' are well aware of this aspect of the game.
KO Mode is a new, stand-up only variation of the game which removes the ground-game and clinch, instead basically turning the game mode into a Kickboxing match for more casual users. This means that the guy who owns the game and knows how to do submissions will be unable to simply perform a take-down whenever he gets in trouble against a more causal player, which will be music to the ears for many.
We heard from lots of people that they would play that way with their more casual friends; no ground game allowed, just KOs. And part of it was from testing the new KO physics system and capturing videos for internal review. We had a debug setting that turned on one-hit knockouts and ended up having these very quick, but very intense fights that always finished with a spectacular KO.
Also new is UFC Ultimate Team. Yes, you read that right, Ultimate Team. Unlike other popular Ultimate Team modes like in FIFA and Madden, UFC 2's version will obviously be different, as explained by one of the game's developers in an interview with Gamespot.com:
It will obviously work a little differently than the other team-based sports when you get down to the details. But the basics are this: you can create up to 5 fighters in different weight classes, when you fight you earn coins, and with coins you can purchase packs of items to improve your fighters. One of our big strengths is individual athlete customization, there's a lot more of it in our game than you might find in other Ultimate Team experiences.
That sounds very interesting indeed. Further developments have been made to the Career Mode too, and you can now create a female fighter, which was unavailable in the previous version.
Of course there will be gameplay changes and tweaks, which we will hear more about closer to the release date which is expected to be Summer 2016, but in the meantime EA Sports have published a trailer with the first information about the game:
The cover has been announced, and Ronda Rousey will star alongside a mystery man, which we can only assume will be Cathal Pendred:
We're seriously looking forward to giving this a bash.
