Diego Maradona has taken to his Facebook page to blast Japanese games publisher Konami who he claims used his likeness in Pro Evolution Soccer 2017.
Maradona is available to players in the game who play the 'MyTeam' mode, which requires users to pay money or in-game coins which take an absolute age to accumulate, in order to have a chance at unlocking a special legend player for their team.
The chances are very, very low, so if a player wants to get Maradona they will have to be extremely lucky or pay a lot of money, and El Diego is very upset that Konami are using his name and likeness to make money in this way.
I heard yesterday that the Japanese company Konami uses my image for its game PES 2017. Unfortunately, my lawyer Matias Morla will initiate the corresponding legal actions. I hope this is not another scam...
The first and obvious joke to be made is that Konami could have stuck to PES tradition and called him 'Diajo Maladora' or something similar, but in recent years they have been trying to compete with FIFA's Ultimate Team legends and have used their partnerships with clubs like Liverpool and Barcelona to secure the licences for these players.
Seemingly, at least according to Diego Maradona, they have not secured his licence for use, although that seems like a glaring mistake that you would think a company the size of Konami would not make.
It remains to be seen if Maradona has a case, but really this whole issue just makes us wish that you could actually win a cup to unlock legends in games, rather than have to pay for them.
We remember when winning the Konami Cup would unlock the classic teams, it's such a shame to see features like that taken away purely to make money, but micro-transactions are here and they aren't going anywhere.
