The legendary action role-playing game series Diablo has returned to much praise, with the fourth instalment, Diablo IV, released earlier in the week.

The series began in 1997 and it is its first release since 2012's Diablo III, and is available to play on PC, Xbox One/S/X, and PS4/5.

Players can make use of a host of different modes in the game including randomly generated dungeons, open world play, and player versus player, with critics complementing the range of features.

The game has received an 87 score on Metacritic, and while not every review was totally sold on the game, the overall response was hugely positive.

TRG: "Diablo 4 is a meticulously crafted action RPG and sets a new standard for isometric, open-world adventures."

TrueGaming: "A beautifully ferocious world filled to the brim with beasts and demons for you to explore utilizing a lot of freedom in your playstyle to vanquish your foes complemented with a great campaign to destroy the Daughter of Hatred once and for all."

Stevivor: "Overall Diablo 4 has far exceeded expectations. I was worried that the game design would fall too far in the direction of the exceedingly overrated Diablo 2 (yeah I said it, nostalgia is a helluva drug) but the team have blended it well with the much maligned Diablo 3."

MGG: "Diablo 4 manages to combine the best elements of the license. We're back to the simple but enjoyable gameplay we've come to expect from Diablo, combined for the first time with a well-thought-out, well-filled open world."

The Guardian: "Diablo 4 is certainly a tasty proposition for fans of the series, but their appetite may not be fully satisfied. Repetitive nature of side activities and their small rewards steer us towards the storyline, which initially also leaves a lot to be desired. Fortunately, the foundations for further development are solid, the combat is satisfying and the size of the world offers plenty to do."
