After leading Galway to the 2011 All-Ireland U21 title, Anthony Cunningham was asked would he go for the vacant managerial position with the senior team.
He said he would but was adamant his two selectors, Mattie Kenny and Tom Helebert, would have to join him on the ticket.
Two years later, both Kenny and Helebert left the setup. The trio had guided Galway to the All-Ireland final in their first year but the team collapsed in a heap in 2013, losing badly to Dublin in the Leinster final and Clare in an All-Ireland quarter final.
The local press deemed it a case of 'too many chiefs and not enough Indians'. The perception was that Kenny was too dominant a person to play second fiddle.
His star has risen this year after he guided to Cuala to the Dublin club title and subsequently to victory over Kilkenny champs, Clara, in the provincial semi-final.
As of today, he has been installed as 7/4 joint favourite for the job. Michael Donoghue, former All-Ireland winning club manager with Clarinbridge had been outright favourite but can now be gotten at the same price as Kenny.
Anthony Daly, the most frequently touted outside candidate, can be got at 10/3. Jeff Lynskey, the man who led Galway to the 2015 minor All-Ireland is at 7/2.
Intriguing outside candidates include Eamon O'Shea at 10/1 and Liam Sheedy at 12/1. The former is the head of economics at NUIG and lives in the county. However, he has just left a high profile inter-county job and it is unlikely he'll want to return to the fray so soon.
In terms of outsiders? Mattie Murphy has already managed Galway on two separate occasions (1996, 1999-2000) and is no longer in charge of the minors. The chances of him getting the senior job are very slight. He's at 33/1.
If you are keen to blow money, Ger Loughnane is offered at 100/1. The memory of his previous spell in the job should prevent this from happening.
