It would be fair to say that 2017 All Ireland Football Championship was one of the best in recent memory, despite the fact that apart from Mayo, nobody laid a glove on Dublin.
Despite the usual suspects Dublin, Kerry, and Tyrone, winning their respective provincial championships, the real excitement began when Galway destroyed Mayo in the first game of the Connacht Championship, setting up a clash in the final with the youthful Roscommon side managed by Mayo man Kevin McStay.
This was meant to be the final in which Galway sent out a warning to the other provincial champions but the 'Rossies' had other ideas, securing a fabulous nine point victory and their first Connacht championship in seven years in extremely blustery conditions.
In the final instalment of AIB's Behind The Gates, we're taken behind the scenes of Roscommon's quarter final battles with Mayo.
The producer expertly captures McStay revving up his troops in the heat of battle for the first of their quarter final matches with Mayo, in which nobody gave them a prayer. Roscommon's Donie Smith showed great composure to level the game with a huge free in injury time to force a replay, so the sides were forced to do it all again the following Saturday.
It wasn't to be for Roscommon, and as a result, we saw some extremely powerful stuff from McStay and his coaching in this week's episode.
