Form Guide
Tipperary come into this first championship game hot off the back of their successful league campaign. Despite losing to All-Ireland champions Limerick by six in the division one semi-final, Tipperary went unbeaten in the regular run of games, topping the Division One B table as well as accumulating more points than any other side in the top flight.
On the other hand, Clare's form was undoubtedly inferior. The Banner County struggled, recording just two wins for five games in Division 1A. They managed to beat particularly weak Wexford and Westmeath teams and probably got their most rewarding result of the season when they drew with Cork. However, this Clare team simply couldn't live with the top teams and their games against Galway and Limerick made that all too clear.
Head-to-head Tipperary are the obvious and clear favourites, the sides haven't met competitively yet this season, but the fact that Tipperary went five games unbeaten and dealt bruising defeats to Kilkenny and Waterford gives them the edge. Additionally, when these two teams clashed in the pre-season leagues Tipperary comfortably saw off their local rivals 2-22 to 0-20.
However, this is the opening round of championship and anything could happen, these sides that were miles apart a month ago could be right back together come Sunday.
Team News
Teams were named Friday for the game. Banner fans will be decided to see John Conlon at centre half back. The six Clare forwards look very dangerous and young Adam Hogan starts at cornerback.
Tipp's 26-man squad does not include positions.
