Form Guide
Despite Galway's initial success, Armagh done enough in the round-robin series to top their group and book themselves a spot directly in the quarter-final, bypassing the preliminary quarter-final stage.
They finished atop group 2 equal on points with now-eliminated Galway and having beaten the Tribesmen went straight through to the quarter-final stage. Galway weren't the only team underdogs Armagh toppled either, with Westmeath falling foul of the Ulster side. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be three from three with local rivals Tyrone beating Armagh by two points to spoil an otherwise perfect record.
Monaghan's route to Croke Park hasn't been quite as easy with only one win in the round-robin stages and a tight encounter in their preliminary quarter-final. Monaghan managed a win, a draw and a loss in group four, doing just enough to finish in third place. Worryingly their only victory came against winless Clare and a weak Donegal team managed to beat them. However, holding Ulster champions Derry to a draw was no easy feat and proves that on their day, Monaghan can mix with the best.
While their draw against Derry was an admirable result, they only managed to beat Kildare with a last-gasp point in their preliminary quarter-final which is an obvious worry for anyone looking to contend for Sam Maguire.
Overall, Armagh are the favourites their results are far superior and they've been significantly more consistent. However, if Monaghan produced a performance like they did against Derry just about anything could happen.
