Mayo vs Galway in the 1996 Connacht final. A tense game that Mayo edged 3-9 to 1-11 was lit up by one moment that shocked a country (probably not). With the game still in its infancy, Mayo opened up a 1-3 to 0-1 lead, the camera panned to the crowd in Castlebar.
One young man was presented with the opportunity to make himself a legend. He grasped it with two hands and one earth shattering finger. Some say it was the moment the country lost its innocence and began the decent into the heady days of Celtic Tiger excess.
We won't comment on those baseless accusations but we're just glad to be able to see it in all its glory. There have been whisperings that the young man now makes a substantial income by travelling around the county and telling the story of that day. However, if that is true, it is much too underground for anyone to speak openly about. But if anyone does know who he is, then feel free to let the country know.
Thanks to Tom Waldron for sending this in to us.
