Kevin Reilly retired today after suffering a sickening litany of injuries which were detailed in his statement today.
He retires at the age of 29, having fulfilled his boyhood dream of captaining Meath from full back. He won a Leinster title in 2010 and featured on Ireland's successful international rules tour of 2011.
And he is the scorer of one of the most remarkable goals ever struck in the championship. In the 2013 Leinster quarter-final, Meath travelled down to Fortress Aughrim on a wet Saturday.
Wicklow had just disposed of Longford in the first round so you knew they were good. But Meath navigated the tricky assignment beautifully helped in no small degree by Reilly's first half goal.
