The Sunday Independent reports today that an unnamed inter-county footballer from what is described as a 'prominent county' last year failed a drugs test.

According to John Greene, the player was initially surprised but then accepted the positive test.

A spokesperson from Sport Ireland confirmed to the paper that there had been a positive test.

Sport Ireland can confirm that the Irish Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel has determined that an inter-county footballer committed an anti-doping violation.

The Irish Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel is expected to deliver its reasoned written decision shortly. Until such time as that reasoned written decision is delivered, Sport Ireland will not be making any further comment.

It is added that the player claimed to have unintentionally taken the prohibited substance and that the disciplinary panel accepted this reason. There was also evidence presented that the substance entered his system via a contaminated product.

The player is expected to learn his fate within the next fortnight.
