Newly elected Fermanagh-South Tyrone MP Tom Elliott has insisted he will not be attending Fermanagh's championship opener against Antrim next month.
The invitation was extended, probably with mischievous intent, by Sean Lynch, the election agent of his vanquished predecessor Michelle Gildernew.
Elliott is the former leader of the ostensibly moderate Ulster Unionist party although under his leadership they have made strenuous attempts to out-DUP the DUP.
And his avowed reasons for refusing the invitation, which could almost be described as Willie Frazer-esque, bear this out...
The reality is people know this, that I don’t accept they should be flying the Irish tricolour and playing the national anthem of the Republic of Ireland in Northern Ireland. People know that and I have always said that.
Elliott, who is not too keen on gay pride marches either, does reassure people that he will represent everyone in the constituency regardless of religion.
