Gaelic football is going through something of a metamorphosis, and by this time next year the sport may have made some drastic changes.

As Jim Gavin's Taskforce continues to trim new rules to make the game a better spectacle, debates about new championship structures are already underway.

It looks as though 2025 will have the same group-stage format that we have seen over the past two years, but changes is likely to happen after that.

One thing that will be different in 2025 is the absence of pre-season cups like the McKenna Cup, McGrath Cup, FBD League and O'Byrne Cup.

In the congested schedule, the feeling is that there is too much football, especially over winter when the pitches are heavy and conditions tough to play in.

However, with the new rules set to come in, Sligo manager Tony McEntee, is in disbelief that there won't be any pre-season cups to try and adjust with.

It remains a mystery why they are not allowing these games to take place to allow us to have a chance to adapt to any new rules that are coming in,’ Sligo manager Tony McEntee told journalist Micheal Clifford.

"Either way, we need to get a number of challenge matches or otherwise to try these rules out so we can experiment how they work, how to use them properly, how to get the best advantage from them, how to defend against them, how to attack them.

"There is a whole lot of learning to be done here. For the likes of us, who are competing in the league to try and get into Division 2 and earn Sam Maguire status, it may well be a difficult period to adjust to these rules while trying to achieve success at the same time," added McEntee.

"The league is very important for Sligo and I am sure that it is the case for all the other teams as well, so a good start to the league is imperative.

"I am surprised that they have decided to cancel them because it is a good opportunity. Prior to the league last year, we played five challenge matches, one of which was in the FBD.

"Those games are a valuable opportunity to get a practice game which you might not otherwise get."

If the proposed changes by Gavin's Taskforce are made, then there will need to be a bedding period for teams, and players to adjust to the new rules.

Without pre-season tournaments, it means the National League will be the place that first see these changes in action, and that could be potentially messy.
