The Aer Lingus College Football Classic took place this afternoon at the Aviva Stadium. It was a very enjoyable afternoon of pigskin with Georgia Tech winning 17-14 in the end.
The occasion has brought a slew of American journalists to the Emerald Isle and there has been the usual amount of curiosity about the ways of the Irish. And so today's Boston Globe includes a colour piece by journalist Julian Benbow set at Trinity College amid a pep rally yesterday afternoon. In the piece, Benbow meets two twin sisters from Clontarf, who play gaelic football. What exactly is gaelic football, you ask? Let the Boston Globe explain:
Both sisters play Gaelic football, a game an American once described to them as “People hitting balls with a giant spoon.” But they have a mutual appreciation that crosses both sports.
We presume this American was trying to describe hurling to the sisters but even still --- a giant spoon? We've heard some curious descriptions of GAA over the years from the Americans, but this takes the biscuit.
