I had the good fortune to spend six hours in the fine Kilkenny town of Callan last evening. Preparations are underway for the Abhainn Ri festival and there is great anticipation for Wednesday night's ceili. While visiting local fine dining caterer Chips and Co., I had an opportunity to peruse a local newspaper. I encountered some nuggets of information that will be of interest to non-Kilkenny folk:
- Only about 50 people attended the Kilkenny senior hurlers training session last Saturday morning. It was a rainy morning, but this paltry turn-out (for a training session) was a mirror to the depressed state of the country as a whole during the recession in the eyes of a local journalist.
- In the county, last September's All-Ireland final loss to Tipperary is being described as a 'blip'.
- There is legitimate concern about Henry Shefflin's knee. It had shown bruising after the Leinster final loss and he did not train on Saturday.
