Tributes have been paid to Cork football and hurling legend Teddy McCarthy after his sudden passing aged 57.
McCarthy famously became the first, and still only player, to win All-Ireland football and hurling titles in the same year when he triumphed with Cork in both codes in 1990.
The Glanmire and Sarsfields man won hurling titles in 1986 and 1990 and football titles in 1989 and 1990. He was also named Texaco Footballer of the Year in 1989.
"We at Sarsfields Hurling Club are beyond devastated at the sudden passing of our much loved Vice-Chairman, Teddy McCarthy," the club said in a message on social media.
"Teddy was our most famous of players and the only player to win All-Ireland inter-county hurling and football medals in the same season.
"Teddy was a true ambassador for our club and the GAA wider family. His passing has left a huge void for all our members both young and old and he will be hugely missed by all.
"The Club wishes to extend our deepest condolences to his wife Oonagh, sons Cian and Niall, daughter Sinead and extended family members."
Those triumphs in 1990 saw McCarthy score three points from midfield in Cork's hurling final win against Galway and a point from half-forward as the Rebels beat Meath to claim Sam Maguire.
Teddy was passionate about GAA and sport and I always enjoyed chatting after games.
My sympathies to his wife Oonagh, and children Cian, Niall and Sinead.

A legendary figure of our games gone far too soon.

As a kid I spent many a day out the back garden trying to do things Teddy MCCarthy could do. He was a player before his time. Fearless, competitive, passionate, highly skilled and accomplished. I didn’t know the man but I’m very saddened to hear the news this evening. May he RIP
