As reported in the Irish Independent, a brawl had broken out subsequent to the final whistle and after falling on the ground, Andrew Comerford was knocked unconscious as result of the kick from Sweetman.

Although he regained consciousness before the ambulance arrived, Comerford suffered a broken jaw and couldn't eat solid food for six weeks.

Speaking in court Sweetman said 'All I can do is apologise and even that isn’t enough.' He was given a two and a half year suspended sentence. He also had €6,000 in court to show his remorse for the assault.
