Ulster University got their Electric Ireland Sigerson Cup defence off to a winning start on Tuesday night, as they secured a comfortable first round victory away to ATU Sligo in the first game of the 2025 competition.

The majority of Tuesday's games were cancelled amid the ongoing nationwide cold snap, with TU Dublin v University of Galway, UCC v UCD, and TUS Midlands v Maynooth University all postponed in the icy conditions.

However, the game in Sligo was able to go ahead, meaning that the college Gaelic football season could get underway on Tuesday night.

It was to be a ruthless start from the visitors on the night, with ATU Sligo getting only one score on the board in the opening 20 minutes as Ulster University cruised into a comfortable early lead.

Ultimately, it turned into a routine victory for the defending champions, with Down's Danny Magill the star of the show as they ran out 2-17 to 1-7 victors.

It took until first-half stoppage time before ATU Sligo got their first score from play on the board, as they were up against it on the opening night of the Electric Ireland Sigerson Cup.

Though Danny Fullerton top scored for Ulster University with 1-03, it was wing-back Danny Magill who stood out for the holders.

Magill charged forward on multiple occasions and slotted over some sumptuous points to end up with an impressive tally of 0-07 from wing-back.

A Tailteann Cup winner at inter-county level with Down, Magill was a driving force for Ulster University as they got their Sigerson Cup defence off to a winning start. Magill looks set to be a crucial player as they seek to defend their crown.
