Shane Kingston makes class gesture to family of Dillon Quirke
Enda Treacy, sports journalist with the Tipperary Star, attended the funeral and revealed details of Kingston's classy gesture in his column this week:
"There have been so many touching stories of people who have reached out to the Quirke family to give them comfort since Dillon’s passing, but one that really has stuck with me is the gesture from Cork hurler Shane Kingston, who travelled up to Clonoulty to give the Quirke family back Dillon’s jersey from his final Tipperary game against Cork back in May."
"The two men had marked each other in the game and traded jerseys at the final whistle, and it was a touch of real class from Kingston to travel all that way to pay his respects, and it really showed the quality of the Cork hurling family."
Tributes poured in for Quirke following his passing.
At his funeral mass his uncle Andrew Fryday who is also Chairman of Clonoulty-Rossmore remembered his nephew as a "shining star."
"He was such a lovely, lovely fella, a perfect gentleman. Any mother or father would have been lucky to have him as their son."
"Last Friday evening Dillon made a triumphant exit from his life, doing what he loved with his teammates, the great friends he loved so much, in front of the people he cherished the most - his family," he continued.
"What an inspiring hero he was to us both on and off the field.
"Dillon, until we meet again go gently into the good night and shine brightly."
All Tipperary senior club championship matches were postponed in the wake of Quirke's passing.
Clonoulty-Rossmore return to action on Sunday when they take on Moycarkey-Borris in their third group game of the Tipp SHC championship in Boherlahan.
