Former Dublin hurling captain Eoghan O'Donnell has left the hurlers to join forces with the footballers for the 2025 season.

The Whitehall-Colmcille player previously played with Dessie Farrell's footballers in 2022 after the hurlers were knocked out but has defected fully this time.

It's a big blow for new boss Niall Ó Ceallacháin, losing one of his key players not long after taking the job with O'Donnell set to focus solely on football.

It's not the first time Dublin hurling has lost players to its football counterparts down through the years, with dual playing now a thing of the past.

Con O'Callaghan

The Cuala star won two club hurling All-Irelands, starring as a target-man in full forward but he hasn't played hurling for Dublin since the 2014 All-Ireland minor quarter final, which they lost to Waterford.

Cormac Costello

O'Donnell's Whitehall-Colmcille team-mate was also a talented hurler, showcasing his talents in the 2011 minor season, scoring 4-2 from play in their semi-final win over Waterford.

He played minor again for Dublin in 2021, under-21 for in 2013 and hurled for his club in recent times, including this year, but has focused solely on the footballers from an inter-county perspective since joining the senior panel in 2013.

Ciaran Kilkenny

Along with Costello, Kilkenny was a key man on the Dublin team that lost the 2011 All-Ireland minor final, hitting 1-6 in their semi-final win against Waterford.

He won Leinster minor hurling and football titles that year but didn't play under-21, having been called up to the senior footballers the following year.

Diarmuid Connolly

Connolly was part of the Dublin team that lost the 2007 All-Ireland under-21 final to Galway, starting in midfield. He never played senior for the Dubs, despite being linked with a move a number of times down through the years.

Eric Lowndes

Lowndes won back-to-back Leinster minor hurling medals in 2011 and '12, losing two All-Ireland finals. He joined the senior football panel in 2014, winning three All-Ireland medals.

Tomas Brady

The Na Fianna star won Leinster minor and under-21 hurling medals before landing the National League with the Dublin hurlers in 2011 as a full back.

Anthony Daly was 'very disappointed' when he left to join Jim Gavin's footballers in 2013, winning All-Ireland medals in '13, '15 and '16.

Mark Schutte

Schutte played minor and under-21 in both codes, before joining the hurling panel from 2013 to 2016, winning the Leinster title in 2013.

He was added to Jim Gavin's football panel in 2017, winning All-Ireland medals that year and the next as part of Dublin's extended panel.
