A son of a Roscommon legend is set to make an intriguing inter-county switch, with Jack Duggan set to throw his lot in with the Rossies in 2024.
The son of former Roscommon forward Derek Duggan, the forward has previously lined out for Longford at senior level. His most recent appearance for the county came in 2022. He plays his club football for Killoe Emmett Óg, who recently won the Longford senior county final.
According to the Irish Independent, the forward is set to switch under the 'parentage rule' which allows GAA players to represent the county of their heritage under certain circumstances.
14 counties around the country are allowed to recruit players under this rule, with the inclusion criteria mostly based around population. Roscommon are included on that list, although some might feel that moves such as this one go against the spirit of the rule.

Son of Roscommon legend set to make inter-county switch
The law is in place to allow players who cannot make panels in bigger counties to play inter-county football, also enriching the playing resources of that team as a result. However, some on social media have questioned the fairness of a Division One team taking a player from their less successful neighbours in this manner.
In any case, Jack Duggan is perfectly entitled to make the switch.
Roscommon have made good use of this rule in recent years. Galway-based goalkeeper Conor Carroll joined the panel in 2023, going on to be nominated for an All-Star for his performances over the summer. Conor Cox also made a similar switch having previously represented Kerry at various levels, then going on to play his club football in Roscommon having transferred from Listowel Emmetts to Éire Óg.
It remains to be seen how much of a part Jack Duggan will play for Roscommon in 2024, although it seems he is intent on following in his father's footsteps by representing the county.
