With each passing campaign, it seems that many GAA fans are growing more weary of the spectacle on show at the top level of Gaelic football.

There are some incredible games played at inter-county level each season, but there are also no shortage of poor spectacles over the course of the year. Many prominent voices within the sport have called for rule changes in order to encourage more attacking play, something that could now be on the horizon.

The likes of Jim Gavin, James Horan, Malachy O’Rourke, Eamonn Fitzmaurice, Colm Collins and Colm Nally have been added to a 'Football Review Committee' by new GAA President Jarlath Burns in order to consider what changes could be implemented in the near future.

Davy Burke names six GAA rules new committee could change

While many GAA fans will be keen to see new rules brought into Gaelic football, some currently involved at inter-county level are probably more hesitant to see major changes made to the sport.

That is understandable, with coaches having spent years developing their tactical approach only to potentially see it thrown out the window due to new rules coming into play.

Speaking to the Irish Times, Roscommon manager Davy Burke said that the new committee should use careful consideration before overhauling the rules. In saying that, he did name six possible rules that he could see coming in at some point.

Getting rid of the advanced mark is the obvious one.

After that there’s the shot clock, there’s the possibility of holding men up the field, keeping three defenders and three forwards inside the 45, maybe limiting how many men you can bring back inside your own half, stopping any back-ball once it goes beyond the midfield line.

They’re really the only options that I see, or some version of those.

I think they should have a close eye on the rest of the league and the full championship though and use the August, September and October window to review, analyse and scrutinise.

All of those rules have been suggested in the past, with most GAA fans agreeing that the advanced mark does not work in its current form.

The other rule changes would prove to be much more radical, with all of them serving in some manner to limit the amount of players that teams can bring back in order to defend.

It will be interesting to see what they come up with over the coming months.
