Roscommon fell to a second successive defeat in the All-Ireland round robin series yesterday, coming out on the wrong end of a 2-14 to 1-15 scoreline against Mayo at Dr Hyde Park.

The Rossies have had a difficult season so far in 2024, winning just one of their seven games en route to being relegated from Division 1, before falling at the first hurdle in Connacht against Mayo.

Yesterday's game was another one in which they were largely outplayed by their opponents, with Kevin McStay's men dictating the pace of play throughout the match. They were six points up in injury time, and while Roscommon would score a late penalty to get back into the contest, they were not able to level the scores.

This result means that they have now lost won just one of their ten fixtures in league and championship.

Roscommon boss Fuming over refereeing decisions in Mayo loss

Davy Burke has come under some criticism for Roscommon's performances in 2024, although he feels that quite a few things have gone against his side in recent months. That includes yesterday's game, where he was of the opinion that a number of refereeing decisions cost his dearly.

The incident in question came when Ryan O'Donoghue was awarded a penalty with ten minutes left in the game, with Burke believing that the Mayo man took too many steps prior to going to ground.

Speaking to the media after the game, he said that it continued a pattern of decisions going against Roscommon this season.

Eight steps are eight steps. Were we not looking at Sean Bugler a month ago 14 steps in Croke Park and was there not a big clampdown on steps?

Game being decided on eight steps by Ryan O'Donoghue. Was there not a penalty shout at the other end that he gave for a free out? Some of these decisions are baffling.

We had a black card in Croke Park. For the first time ever, I think it was the first time in history a black card was given for a man in front. Eoin McCormack was in front and he got a black card.

Look, when you are the poor old Rossies you don't get these calls, do you?..

The first one Diarmuid Murtagh was through and he gave a free out. Daire Cregg takes a shot at goal and it's a foot block. The fourth official saw Ryan O'Donoghue's was a penalty but never saw any Roscommon decisions. It's very funny, isn't it? Look lads, it is what it is.

While Davy Burke may feel that Roscommon were hard done by on this occasion, there is no doubt that they have been well short of the required standard in 2024.

Despite this, they would still secure their place in an All-Ireland preliminary quarter-final with a victory over Cavan next weekend.
