The Cork footballers are one of Joe Brolly's favourite punchbags. And he has given them a thorough going-over in the pages of the Sunday Independent today.
Cork are a team who 'wilt on the big day' and only perform in games that don't matter.
He quotes Darragh O'Se as saying Cork are 'a great team in the League', a comment which reminds one of Liam Brady's summation of David Connolly's strengths in the Sunday Tribune many years ago - 'effective against weak opposition.'
Not only that, but their only All-Ireland in the modern era came against the worst team to ever reach an All-Ireland Final. Though, it could be pointed out here that this over-promoted Down side had dispatched the supposedly imperious Kerry in the quarter-final.
He finished by saying:
Cork have been far too fucking nice for too long. High time they got off their knees and justified their nickname. Otherwise, they face another decade of tea in the backroom at half time.
